Dutch billionaire buys cattle farm built with EU funds by son of former minister
A cattle ranch, owned by Fidesz MP János Süli’s son, was created using EU funds, yet over the years it showed no sign of livestock being raised. Now, through unknown means, the property is no longer owned by the politician’s son, but a Dutch billionaire.
The company Biogas Productor Kft. is no longer the owner of the property in Tófalu, North-East Hungary, instead, the property deed lists HLT Production Kft. as the owner since January 2026. The site is – at least on paper – is home to a cattle ranch, for which the company of the son of János Süli (Fidesz MP, former minister) received several hundred million forints of EU funding. Although the money was taken and the farm was completed, no cows were seen there for 6 years.
After we received reports from readers that there were still no animals on the farm, we asked Ákos Hadházy, an independent MP documenting corruption, who was travelling there at the time, to see if he had the chance to see if this was indeed the case. Hadházy went to the site, but to his great surprise, he saw cows in the pen for the first time in 6 years.
This was such an unexpected turn of events that we started looking for the reason in the company database and property deeds. While company registries show no signs of a change in ownership, the property deed lists a new owner for the farm since January 2026: HLT Production Kft. It is possible that the company registry has not yet been updated, but it is also possible that Süli’s son’s company is still present on the site as a tenant.
Model farms and indoor football
HLT Production Kft. is owned by Janssen Joseph Henri and Hunland Group Holding Kft., which is an interest of Huijs-Janssen Suzanne Petronella and Janssen Joseph Henri.
The billionaire Dutch Janssen family has been living and operating companies in Hungary for decades. Their deals have been reported in the press many times. For example, our newspaper reported that although one of Fidesz’s main campaign slogans was to protect Hungarian lands from foreigners, before the auctions began, they amended the law and made it possible for EU citizens to buy land.
This is why foreign citizens won state land auctions in several counties in 2015, either in their own names or through their family members, or proxies. Among the foreign farmers, one of the big winners of the Pest County land auctions stood out, Joseph Janssen, who, together with his wife and the managing director of his company, was able to obtain slightly more than four hundred hectares after the land auctions, for a total of 813 million forints.
By then, the Hunland group of companies, which previously (before 2010) supported equestrian sports,
had already appeared as a sponsor behind the NB2 Dunakeszi Kinizsi Futsal team – the club Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó played for.
Szijjártó even boasted that he knew every sponsor personally.
But the family’s name also surfaced in connection with the fact that in 2023, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán declared five companies of the Hunland group of companies, including HLT Production Kft., as model farms. ‘Model farm’ is a legally established agricultural super-corporation status. The main advantage of gaining this title is that such a company is entitled to a 50-year land lease, while normal Hunland has also been among the company groups receiving the most agricultural support several times , and they also received two billion forints in non-refundable support from the government for their sow farm, which will be handed over in 2023 .
We contacted the group to find out how they heard about the Biogas Productor cattle farm and why they bought the property. Although we initially received a letter saying the company would respond within 48 hours, this ultimately did not happen.
Millions in EU support disappeared
As Átlátszó reported earlier, the cattle farm in Tófalu was built for about one billion HUFs (2,543 million EUR), for which the company of the son of former Paks Minister János Süli received 468 million forints in EU funding years ago. However, there was never any sign of agricultural activity.
The case was eventually investigated by the Integrity Authority (IH), which monitors the spending of EU funds. The authority confirmed that the company did not carry out any real agricultural activity. Furthermore, Biogas Productor exceeded the 2-year deadline for closing the project by more than 2 years, to the beginning of 2024, and the plant did not have a final occupancy permit by the time the Integrity Authority concluded its investigation. The Authority eventually filed a complaint against an unknown perpetrator with the National Tax and Customs Authority for the crime of budget fraud and the misdemeanor of using a false private document.
We contacted Biogas Productor Kft. to ask whether they sold the property because the project attracted the attention of the press and authorities, or if there was another business decision behind it. We also asked whether the managing authority ultimately found irregularities in their project or not, and whether they had to repay the EU funding they received. If so, how much?
The company did not respond to our request. However, it is clearly visible in the company database that
Between 2020 and 2024 (except for 2023), the company had no revenue at all and continuously generated losses.
We also inquired with the Ministry of Public Administration and Regional Development whether an irregularity procedure had been initiated against Biogas Productor Kft. in connection with the misuse of EU funds, but no response had been received by the time of publication of our article.
