Six opposition parties (DK, Jobbik, LMP, MSZP, Párbeszéd,) has decided last year, in December to come together to defeat the ruling Fidesz party,  led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban in the upcoming parliamentary elections in 2022. The parties agreed to coordinate a single joint candidate to oppose Fidesz in each of the 106 electoral districts, and to run on a single electoral list.

In order to chose the best and most supported candidates , they organized primaries to select the joint contenders both for the individual electoral districts and for the post of prime minister. The first round was held on September, the results can be found here.

After the first round, 3 candidates remained for the post of Prime Minister, but Gergely Karácsony, Mayor of the capital, decided to withdraw from the race, leaving only 2 candidates in the running for the second round: Klara Dobrev of the Democratic Coalition (DK) party, Vice-President of the European Parliament, and conservative Peter Marki-Zay, mayor of Hódmezővásárhely, representative of Everyone’s Hungary Movement (Mindenki Magyarországa Mozgalom, MMM).

The second round lasted for a week and finally ended last Saturday – with a total of 662 thousand voters participating. The counting of the votes began on Sunday morning.

Based on the results of the final round, our data team, Atlo created a subpage dedicated to the second round of the opposition primaries.

In addition to the final results, which became official late on Sunday evening, the site also showed the partial results announced during the day on regularly updated graphs and maps. Besides the traditional charts, showing for example how many votes were cast for each candidate, and exactly which county was won by which contestant, this time Atlo created several new charts and chart pairs too, for example the ones that show the percentage distribution alongside the processing rate and the surplus votes.
