Fidesz vice-chairman spotted in Ferrari owned by CEO charged with 10 billion-HUF embezzlement

Lajos Kósa, vice-chairman of Fidesz and representative of Debrecen has been spotted in a Ferrari and on a saling cruise with the owner of the bankrupt Bászna Gabona Zrt., Gábor Szilágyi. The company’s CEO is under investigation for embezzling over 10 billion HUF. While indebting a company, the owner collected luxury cars, including the one the Fidesz MP was photographed in.

The agriculture firm Bászna Gabona was established in 2019, and in the same year, it secured a 500 million forint government loan to carry out a major investment project in Mátészalka, North-Eastern Hungary. The company continued to recieve lucrative deals, and by 2024, its annual turnover exceeded 15 billion HUFs (39 million EURs).

From the beginning, the company was closely tied to Fidesz vice-chairman, former mayor and current MP of Debrecen, Lajos Kósa. The company was owned by Gábor Szilágyi and Balázs Szilágyi, both distant relatives of Kósa through their father, Dr. Karolina Éva Kósa (Lajos Kósa’s sister), and a company named Méker Kft. At that time, Méker Kft. was owned by the Szilágyi brothers and Lajos Kósa’s mother.

However, members of the Kósa family bolted from the company in 2021, leaving Gábor Szilágyi as the sole owner. Late 2025 it was revealed that the company has become insolvent, leading to bankruptcy proceedings that concluded earlier this year. During the proceedings, the state had to pay over 6,5 billion HUFs (16,9 milllion EUR) to farmers who were defrauded by Bászna Gabona,

while Gábor Szliágyi was charged with the embezzlement of 10 billion forints.

While Bászna Gabona Zrt. accumulated a massive debt, the company’s owner was collecting luxury cars in an underground parking lot in Budapest. According to Átlátszó’s sources, the collection included rare Ferrari models, such as a Ferrari 296 GTB Hungaroring Edition, of which only five were ever made. Szilágyi also purchased a Ferrari 812 Competizione, a Ferrari F8 Spider, and a Ferrari Testarossa, all of which cost hundreds of millions of HUFs.

Hidden luxury car collection revealed

The luxury cars were hidden away in rented places in a parking lot in Budapest, presumably because Szilágyi did not want to take them to his base of operations in Mátészalka, where they would have attracted a lot of attention. In March, Átlátszó has obtained photos showing Lajos Kósa, vice-chairman of the ruling party behind the wheel of the Ferrari F8 Spider in the underground parking lot.

The Ferrari F8 Spider is a 720-horsepower masterpiece of Italian engineering that, thanks to its hardtop convertible design, offers the open-top experience in just under 14 seconds. With its 3.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, the car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 340 km/h. The interior features a blend of modern racing technology and luxury materials, such as carbon fiber elements and fine leather, with a market value ranging from 125 to 170 million forints depending on condition and extras.

The Ferraris disappeared from the parking lot in Budapest in late December 2025 or early January 2026 – more precisely, they were sold. The change in ownership likely occurred just as Bászna Gabona’s bankruptcy began to receive media attention. In other words, it very much appears that Szilágyi may have been trying to salvage what he could and sold his luxury cars before they could be seized to cover the company’s debts.

We contacted both Bászna Gabona Zrt. and Gábor Szilágyi’s attorney to find out whether Szilágyi actually owned the listed Ferraris, and if so, why he sold them a few months ago. We also asked about his relationship with Lajos Kósa. Dr. Botond Zsolt Karalyos, who is representing Gábor Szilágyi in the criminal case, wrote the following to our newspaper:

“Without my client’s consent – and citing the interests of the defense – I have no legal authority to answer your questions. I suggest you direct your questions to the press officers of the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County Police Headquarters and/or the County Prosecutor’s Office.”

We also submitted our questions to the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County Police Headquarters, which was unable to provide information “due to data protection reasons”. We did, however, manage to reach one of the car’s buyers. He said he did not purchase the vehicle directly from Gábor Szilágyi, but he did meet him during the transaction.

MP participated in CEO’s sailing trip

Gábor Szilágyi maintained a good relationship with Lajos Kósa for a long time. Apart from the recently released photo behind the wheels of the Ferrari, back in 2017 Kósa also appeared at the ruling party’s off-site faction meeting in Velence, on a motorcycle identical to the K1600 BMW leased by Méker Kft.

News portal 24.hu contacted Méker Kft. to find out why the company needed the BMW motorcycle, as well as two BMW 530e iPerformance hybrid upper-mid-range cars. Gábor Szilágyi responded to the publication, stating only that the company’s vehicles “were not used by Lajos Kósa, are not used by him, and cannot be used by him, as he has no connection whatsoever with Méker Kft.” According to Fidesz’s press office, Kósa borrowed the motorcycle from a friend.

Átlátszó also obtained photos showing Szilágyi and Kósa together at a sailing trip.

The sailboats shown in the photos belong to Croatia Yachting; the Hanse 588 Mivasa is currently available for charter at a weekly rate of 3,704 euros (approx. 1.5 million forints). The air-conditioned boat was built in 2020 and accommodates 12 people in 5+1 cabins, with 3+1 toilets and showers. The boat is valued at over 600,000 euros (approx. 240 million forints). Interestingly, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was photographed last summer in Croatia on a Hanse 588 sailboat of the exact same type.

We have contacted Lajos Kósa and the Fidesz press office to ask about the nature of the relationship between the MP and his distant relative, Gábor Szilágyi; how often they meet; whether they have taken a boat trip together; and whether Lajos Kósa has ever sat in one of Szilágyi’s Ferraris.

As of the publication of this article, we had not received a response from either the representative or the party.

Lajos Kósa washes his hands of the Bászna Gabona bankruptcy

Earlier, when the agricultural company’s became apparent, Lajos Kósa told the press that he had no specific information about the company’s operations, but he acknowledged the family connection. He also said that whenever he was in Mátészalka or the surrounding area and they met, Gábor Szilágyi “was happy to show him the company’s premises.”

However, Átlátszó obtained a spreadsheet in which someone had modeled the distribution of agricultural and real estate assets worth hundreds of millions of forints, including the assets of Bászna Gabona Zrt. The file is not official accounting material, but rather a spreadsheet that calculates the actual ownership structure based on various companies, real estate, and cash contributions. According to the calculations, a person or entity designated as ‘KL’ in the arrangement holds a ownership share of nearly two-thirds, while the basis for the valuation consists partly of unverifiable, hectare-based estimates.

Meanwhile, the government has declared the liquidation of Bászna Gabona Zrt. a matter of strategic importance, allowing affected farmers to receive their compensation more quickly. Under the state compensation program, a total of 6.53 billion forints will be paid out to them pursuant to 581 decisions, and moreover, almost all of this has already been credited to the accounts of those affected, Agriculture Minister István Nagy announced at the end of February.
