Kleptocracy

Front Man – The Mask of Power, a film about the Orbán era

In our one-hour film, drawing on stories uncovered by Átlátszó and without claiming to be exhaustive, we trace the rise of Lőrinc Mészáros from 2012 to the present day. Richly illustrated with our best video reports from the past 15 years, the film features former and current Átlátszó journalists, experts, and, in our archival footage, Lőrinc Mészáros himself.

In the archives of Átlátszó, which turns 15 this year, the name Lőrinc Mészáros appears in the titles of 455 articles between 2012 and 2026: year after year, we documented the Felcsút businessman’s meteoric rise to the top of the Hungarian wealth list with numerous investigative articles and video reports. That is why we thought Mészáros’s career would be an ideal subject for a commemorative film summarizing a longer period and illustrating how the Orbán era operates.

Only a fraction of the stories covered in the 455 articles made it into the film, but we hope that, like a drop in the ocean, it illustrates, on the one hand, the methods by which the privileged billionaires—referred to as the national capitalist class—have amassed their wealth, and on the other hand, our persistent efforts to bring all of this to the attention of the general public year after year.

Our film analyzes the unprecedented growth of the economic empire associated with Lőrinc Mészáros, its political entanglements, and its operational characteristics, while showcasing the meteoric rise of Hungary’s now wealthiest man and his close relationship with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Our interviewees reveal how he went from being a simple gas fitter to the country’s richest man through the systematic acquisition of state contracts and EU subsidies. The investigative reports cited in the film detail the circumstances surrounding the acquisition of vast landholdings, media interests, and industrial facilities, as well as the use of luxury yachts and private jets kept hidden from the public.

The film highlights the political favoritism in which economic success is determined by government connections rather than market competition. According to the analyses, this process amounts to a form of dynasty-building, where the nominal owner actually acts as a custodian of the political elite’s wealth.

The overall picture depicts a clientelist system in which the conversion of public funds into private wealth takes place in a centrally directed manner. The central thesis of the opinions expressed in the film is that Lőrinc Mészáros’s rise is not the result of traditional market processes, but rather of “political favoritism” and a kind of “kleptocratic state structure.”

The interviewees shed light on the operation of the frontman system, in which the nominal owner effectively functions as an asset manager for a political circle (primarily the Orbán family). The diversified portfolio spans from energy to media and agriculture to the banking sector, in close symbiosis with state subsidies and the favorable shaping of the regulatory environment.

Based on the emerging picture, the Mészáros empire is not an independent market player, but a central element of the “predatory state” (kleptocratic system). The key to its operation lies in converting public funds into private wealth, eliminating market competition, and tailoring the legal environment to its needs.

The empire’s sustainability is questionable should the “public money taps” be shut off; at the same time, the transfer of assets abroad and their concealment in private equity funds has already begun in order to mitigate political risks.
