EU money: 46 million HUF spent on a worthless cave

Danube-Ipoly National Park Directorate spent 46 million HUF on the conservation and expansion works of the Rácskai Cave, located in Remeteszőlős, a suburban village between Nagykovácsi and Budapest. Researchers say the cave is worthless and the 50-100 meter long tunnel expansion built of concrete and the filling up of the surrounding former quarry in the height of the tunnel was a waste of money in times when highly protected caves are being closed. The works were part of the reconstruction project of the endangered Buda Castle caves with a 370 million HUF budget, financed mostly by state and EU funds. The Directorate failed to explain the reasons of the work properly and to respond our questions about the exact costs of the works paid to the companies involved.
